Rolling in My Powered Beach Wheelchair in Pensacola, Florida

When my family started planning our annual summer vacation, we looked at places like Panama City, Florida and Gulf Shores, Alabama. I love both of those destinations because they’re accessible and have powered beach wheelchairs, which can’t be found in many places. I didn’t know of anywhere else that had these motorized beach wheelchairs, so I thought our beach options were limited. Let’s face it, manual beach wheelchairs are widely available, but they just aren’t that comfortable and I’d definitely prefer the freedom of rolling myself around. My family was about to book a trip to one of our usual vacation spots until we discovered Access Mobility of Pensacola. We had never been to Pensacola, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity to try out a new destination.

Access Mobility of Pensacola is owned by Pensacola locals Sid and Lynn Hargis. They actually just opened the business this past March, so all of the beach wheelchairs are brand new. The chairs are similar to the powered beach wheelchairs that I’ve used in other Gulf Coast destinations, but they have new features. These chairs can tilt back to relieve pressure, which I’ve never seen before, and they also have an umbrella holder built in. Since it was so hot when I was on the beach, I took advantage of this feature and avoided getting terribly sunburnt.

To ensure that your experience in the beach wheelchair is as comfortable as possible, I’d suggest putting your own regular wheelchair cushion in the seat. I have a ROHO cushion and using it for the beach wheelchair worked great. Another suggestion if you have trouble staying upright on bumpy terrain is to carry a long velcro strap with you. You can wrap it around the chair and your chest so that you won’t fall forward. The beach can be uneven and a little bumpy in spots, so doing this made me feel secure and comfortable. I was able to stay on the beach for hours in the chair.

Even with the somewhat bumpy beach terrain, I was able to roll in the sand easily with this chair. It was hands-down the most comfortable beach wheelchair I’ve ever used and due to the large inflated tires, it handled the sand effortlessly and was able to roll for quite a while on a full charge. I rolled down the beach along the water for 40 minutes or so, and it was still fully charged when I returned.

As far as pricing goes, it is very reasonable compared to other companies that I’ve used in the past. Here are the prices –

1 day rental: $100

2-6 day rental: $70 per day

Every 7th day: FREE

Umbrella: $5 per day

You honestly can’t put a price on having the freedom and ability to roll up and down the beach independently. I am eternally thankful to Access Mobility of Pensacola for making my vacation such an unforgettable one. Until next time, I’ll be reminiscing about my experiences on the beautiful beaches of Pensacola.
