Wheelchair Friendly Things to Do in Melbourne, Australia

When I say “Australia”, what’s the first place that you think of? Most likely, you’re imagining the stunning Sydney Opera House or maybe even the Great Barrier Reef as some of the best things to do in Australia. If you’re like me, Melbourne probably didn’t immediately cross your mind, but it should! There are tons of great things to do in Melbourne Australia!!

After I visited Melbourne a couple years ago, I fell completely in love with the city. It offered more than I ever imagined and was extremely wheelchair friendly. From the accessible metro to all of the attractions that my heart desired to see, it was easy to get around the city and have a spectacular time.

Below I have listed five of the best wheelchair accessible & fun things to do in Melbourne Australia. Do yourself a favor and make the plunge to see some (or all!) of these amazing destinations in person!

Wheelchair Accessible & Fun Things To Do in Melbourne Australia

Eureka Skydeck

If you’ve heard of Melbourne, you’ve likely heard of the Eureka Skydeck. This massive skyscraper is not only the southern hemisphere’s highest viewing platform, but it also boasts one of the most beautiful views in all of Australia. With the city laying 88 floors below, you can see for miles and miles. People and cars scurrying around below look so tiny when you’re up so high! The city sights are simply incredible.

Believe it or not, the Eureka Skydeck is truly wheelchair accessible! You can go all the way up and see the sights along with everyone else. I would highly recommend going here one of the first days of your trip, as it’s one of the most fun things to do in Melbourne Australia. With such a spread out view, you can plan out what you want to see up close while you’re high enough to have a broad view of it all. And if you’re brave, you can even roll out onto The Edge, a glass bottomed platform that sticks out from the side of the building.

Twelve Apostles

Another beautiful view you do not want to miss is the Twelve Apostles. They are incredible looking giant limestone stacks that formed as the sea eroded the limestone cliffs. While the Twelve Apostles are actually a few hours drive from Melbourne, it’s truly breathtaking and worth a day trip.

Once you get there, the way to view the Twelve Apostles is completely paved so it’s easy to get there in your chair!

Ambleside Tours, a Melbourne based tour company specifically for people with disabilities, can bring you all the way from Melbourne to the Apostles. It’s definitely worth the trip! To read about my experience at the Twelve Apostles, click here.

Hot Air Ballooning

If you’re looking for other fun things to do in Melbourne Australia and a good view to boot, it can’t get any better than the stunning view from a hot air balloon drifting over Melbourne. Hot air balloon? In a wheelchair? Absolutely! Global Ballooning has balloons with baskets that have specially designed seats and seat belts. And no worries about struggling to get into the basket because they included a door on its side with easy access to get in. Don’t let your wheelchair stop you!

Safari Tour

I also would highly recommend visiting Werribee Open Range Zoo. It is a 45 minute safari tour, complete with sightings of giraffe, rhino, zebra, and antelope, all from safe inside the bus. Not only is this tour accessible for wheelchair users, but it’s actually best experienced by people in wheelchairs! Why? People using wheelchairs get to sit up front by the bus driver. You’ll not only get your own private tour guide in a way, but you’ll also have the best view out of the entire bus!

Surfing

Last but not least, if you’re looking for fun things to do in Melbourne Australia be sure to go to the Bellarine or Mornington Peninsula beaches to go surfing. Wait a minute…surfing? But we have wheelchairs! Wheelchair or not, surfing is definitely an awesome option you should take advantage of. The Disabled Surfers Association of Australia is committed to helping people with disabilities realize they truly can surf. Get out there and enjoy the water!

As you can see, you’ll be able to take in the beautiful view of Melbourne, see wild animals, and catch the crashing waves lapping up on shore. There are no limits for wheelchair users in Melbourne, so let yourself enjoy a true vacation without the stress of having to sit everything out simply because you happen to use a wheelchair. Enjoy a plethora of accessible and fun things to do in Melbourne Australia!
