Announcing the Wheelchair Accessible 2019 Curb Free Group Trip!

This past April, the first ever Curb Free group trip for wheelchair accessible travel took place in Morocco. It was truly an incredible trip and great to actually travel with other wheelchair users and longtime followers of Curb Free with Cory Lee! We were able to see remarkable places like the alleyways of Fes and even the snake charmers in Marrakech. It was a trip of firsts and everyone had a great time. Here’s what some of the participants said about the trip:

“Being part of the 2018 group tour of Morocco, organized by Curb Free with Cory Lee and Morocco Accessible Travel Consultants, was an unforgettable experience of a lifetime! Aside from making our own flight arrangements, everything for the trip was taken care of for us so it was a real burden off our shoulders that we did not have to worry about any of the things one would typically be concerned about ahead of an international trip (what to see, where to stay, how to get around, etc.). We simply got on the plane and were swept away on a grand adventure that included tasty local food, many beautiful and historically significant site visits, and so many friendly people, including of course our lovely fellow groupmates, our experienced local driver and tour guide team, and all the welcoming Moroccans who helped make our trip so memorable. If you have the chance to travel with Cory, you will not be disappointed! He has so much experience in accessible travel and his knowledge and planning will help you have the best, most effective use of your limited time and travel resources. We managed to see nearly everything one would want to see in Morocco, in just a week, something that would not have been possible without extensive advanced planning and coordination to ensure accessible transport, hotels, and venues. Take the worry out of your travels, and go in a group with Cory!” – Farah, Curb Free Morocco tour participant
.
“I had the privilege of being on Cory Lee’s first Curb Free Tour, and cannot wait for Tour II! Cory not only handled travel arrangements, but also ensured that my disability-based needs were met. Without his assistance and expertise, I doubt I would have ever had the chance to shop in Marrakesh and stuff my face in Fez.” Emily, Curb Free Morocco tour participant
 .
As soon as that trip ended, I got to work and started thinking about where the 2019 group trip could be. I definitely wanted it to be somewhere that I’ve already visited and with a company that I’ve used before, so that I can absolutely assure you that it’s a wonderful destination and perfect for wheelchair accessible travel. Over the past (almost) 5 years since starting this blog, I’ve worked with numerous companies in a large variety of destinations. However, one place in particular really stuck out to me and I’ve been itching to get back to it since my visit in 2015. Where is this wonderful place??

ICELAND!!!!

 .
That’s right! The 2019 Curb Free group trip will be in Iceland! I’m super excited for this because Iceland is one of my favorite places that I’ve ever been and we’ll be going with a company that I love – Iceland Unlimited. Iceland Unlimited was founded by a wheelchair user and has grown to be one of the most trusted and reputable companies in the country. I had a magnificent time with them back in 2015 and can’t wait for you to experience the beauty of Iceland for yourself in 2019.
 .
This trip will be from July 13th-20th, 2019 and we’ll cover many of the most popular spots. We’ll start in Reykjavik, which is the world’s northernmost capital city, and then we’ll visit the famous Blue Lagoon, the Golden Circle (complete with geysers, waterfalls, and more!), and then we’ll head to the south coast of Iceland to see the black sand beaches and some glaciers! It’s going to be completely EPIC and if you’ve ever wanted to visit Iceland, this is your chance to do some wheelchair accessible travel.

 .Day 01 (July 13th): Arrival/Reykjavik

 .
Welcome to Iceland. Once you arrive in Keflavík International Airport, our private chauffeur will wait for you in the arrival hall of the airport. He brings you to your wheelchair accessible travel hotel in the center of Reykjavik. Enjoy a free afternoon in the city and explore the city center. Don ́t forget to grab yourself a hot dog at the infamous hot dog stand “The Town ́s Best”. Furthermore make sure to check out Reykjavík’s flea market Kolaportið open on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, we also recommend visiting our National Museum (optional) where you can learn more about Iceland ́s history from the Settlement to the present day. You stay for the next 2 nights in a wheelchair friendly hotel in the city centre.
 .
 .

Day 02 (July 14th): Guided Reykjavik Tour and Whale Museum

 .
In the morning your guide will meet you and the rest of your group in your hotel. Your guide will show you the highlights of Reykjavík. This tour, and also all other tours in the next days, take place in an accessible minibus. This minibus has enough space and wheelchair users can easily enter and leave the bus on a ramp. If you want to find a foldable travel wheelchair, look here. On your tour you will visit the much photographed sun voyager, a sculpture designed by Jón Gunnar Árnason. It is located next to the sea side.

 .
In the afternoon, you will visit the Whales of Iceland Exhibition (included). This is the largest whale exhibition in Europe. There you you can learn more about the world ́s biggest mammals. The whales are presented in a unique and illustrative way. There are 23 life size whale models representing the 23 whale species found in Icelandic waters. Day 03 (July 15th): The Volcanic Peninsula Reykjanes and Blue Lagoon

 .
Today you will visit the geothermal active peninsula Reykjanes. Your guide will show you two interesting geothermal areas (Seltún/Krýsuvík and Gunnuhver). There, boiling mud pools and colourful mountains can be found. Another highlight today is the so-called bridge between continents. You have the chance to see one of the world’s major tectonic plate boundaries. Cross the small bridge which was built as a symbol of the connection between Europe and North America. This plate boundary lies across Iceland and is the reason why Iceland has a high concentration of active volcanoes. The latest volcanic eruption on Reykjanes was in the 13. Century and you will see many old lava fields covered with moss during your wheelchair accessible travel tour.
 .
You can have lunch in the LAVA Restaurant of the famous Blue Lagoon and afterwards, you can relax in the milky blue water (comfort package included). The Blue Lagoon is easily accessible to everyone, containing an accessible changing room and a special wheelchair to enter the lagoon itself. The deepest part of Blue Lagoon is around 1.60m/5.2ft ft but most parts of the lagoon are far shallower. You drive to Hella where you stay for the next 2 nights.

Day 04 (July 16th): The Golden Circle and Volcanic Crater Kerið

 .
Today you explore the famous Golden Circle. In the morning your guide picks you up from your hotel. You start your day by driving to Þingvellir National Park. Þingvellir, famous for its beauty and geological and historical value, was accepted as UNESCO’s heritage site in 2004. Your guide shows you the most beautiful places of the park. Later you will visit Strokkur. It is a fountain geyser and it is Iceland’s most impressive and famous geyser, erupting about every 4 –8 minutes, sometimes up to 40 m high. A spectacle not to be missed! The geyser can easily be reached in a wheelchair. Next to the geyser is also an accessible restaurant where we recommend to stop for lunch (not included). In the afternoon your guide will show you Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall”. Wheelchair visitors have a very good view of the waterfall from the parking place.

Day 05 (July 17th): The South Coast of Iceland

 .
It’s time to travel further east along the beautiful south coast. The impressive Seljalandsfoss waterfall will be your first stop for the day. A wheelchair friendly path will take you closer to that picturesque waterfall. Continue to Skógar where you’ll find the impressive Skógafoss waterfall.

Another highlight of the day is the charming village of Vík. This is Iceland’s most southerly village. It is the only seaside settlement in Iceland left without a harbor, due to natural circumstances. Once there, visit the black volcanic beach of Reynisfjara with a view of the Reynisdrangar ocean cliffs. The beach with its round shape stones is a small challenge for wheelchair accessible travel but you will definitely have a good view from the parking lot. Drive a little bit further and stay for the night in the area of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

 .
Further east, you will find the spectacular Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon; the crown jewel of Icelandic nature where surely be amazed by the floating icebergs and the spectacular beauty of this location.
 .
After enjoying this unique experience, it is time to turn back. The afternoon is a driving day only with a few photo stops. You drive back to the area of Hella where you will stay for the night.

Would like to know off the cost other than food, air fare, looks exciting. I am not sure now cold it is in July but I think it’s about 5 hours flight from Toronto. I don’t think I would do well on a extra long flight.

    thanks so much

Wow Just Wow. You guys put me to shame. I haven’t been to half the places you have!

I’m so happy to have found your website! I have had Rhematiod Arthritis for 45yrs. I have an artificial hip for almost as long(42yrs). As you may imagine, it isn’t as stable as it was when I was younger. I can walk some, but can not handle steps anymore, and can only walk short distances. I will need a knee replacement soon as well. I thought my traveling days were pretty much over since I now need a wheelchair.

I was online looking for a destination that my husband and I could go to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. I was pretty discouraged until I found your website. I’ve been reading your blogs for the last 4 hours! It has been encouraging and inspirational reading about all your travels. Thank you for your wanderlust and your dedication to sharing your adventures with others so they to can experience all the excitement and benefits of travel. Happy Trails, Jeanne
