Discovering the Best Places to Visit in Jaipur in 2 Days as a Wheelchair User

During my trip to India, I visited some truly remarkable cities. I saw the Taj Mahal in Agra and rolled around the Sikh temple in Delhi, but the last city on my wheelchair accessible India tour of the Golden Triangle was Jaipur. I only had 2 days in Jaipur and even though it was the last city that I visited in India, it completely blew me away and was unlike anywhere else that I’ve traveled. From admiring beautiful palaces to passing elephants and camels while simply driving down the road, Jaipur has something that visitors of all abilities will find alluring. Here are, in my opinion, some of the best places to visit in Jaipur in 2 days as a wheelchair user –

The Best Places to Visit in Jaipur in 2 Days

 .
Hawa Mahal
 .
Jaipur is known as the Pink City because of the many pink sandstone buildings around the city. While much of Jaipur is very Instagram-worthy, the most popular building to snap a photo of is Hawa Mahal. Hawa Mahal is a palace that was built in 1799 and while I didn’t go inside the palace, I did get plenty of photos from the outside. It may seem a bit silly to list this as one of the best places to visit in Jaipur in 2 days, especially when all I did was look at the outside, but when you see it in person I think you’ll understand why it’s so magnificent.

Hawa Mahal has a honeycomb shape and a staggering 953 windows. No, that’s not a typo. It really does have nearly a thousand windows, which is unbelievable. The palace is made of red and pink sandstone and at 49 feet tall, this is actually the tallest building in the world with no foundation. Plan to stare in awe at Hawa Mahal while in Jaipur.
 .
City Palace
 .
Jaipur is the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan, so the City Palace is an absolute must-visit. Construction on the City Palace started in 1927, when Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II moved his court to Jaipur from Amber. The Jaipur Royal Family actually still resides here in the City Palace today. Unfortunately, I didn’t see them during my visit, but maybe you’ll have more luck.

The entire complex of the City Palace is quite large and there are several buildings, courtyards, and galleries. There is also The Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum on-site, which is accessible via an alternate entrance. I enjoyed rolling around the complex and viewing the various building and courtyards. I didn’t actually go inside to tour the palace, but touring the complex outside was fascinating and I certainly learned a lot about Indian royalty during my visit. I was also impressed with the amount of ramps around the complex. Some of them were a bit steep, but they worked and enabled me to see plenty of the architecture at the City Palace. Like everywhere else in India, it left me amazed and made this one of the best places to visit in Jaipur in 2 days for me.

Jewelry and Textiles
 .
The city of Jaipur is famous for shopping. Whether it’s beautiful jewelry, textiles, art, or something different that you’re looking for, you will easily be able to find it in the city. As usual, I bought way too many souvenirs, but I just couldn’t resist.

My mom wanted to shop for some jewelry, and I wanted to see what all the Jaipur jewelry hype was about, so our guide from Enable Travel took us to the Silver and Art Palace. There were 3 or 4 steps at the entrance, but Enable Travel had a roll-a-ramp that we were able to use and it worked perfectly. Silver and Art Palace had some of the most beautiful jewelry I’ve ever seen. Be prepared though, as it isn’t cheap by any means. My mom saw a bracelet that she really liked and she asked how much it was. $12,000!! I also saw a jade elephant figurine that I wanted, but it was $40,000. Needless to say, we didn’t make any purchases, but it was still fun to browse around and learn more about the beautiful gems in Jaipur.

We also visited a textiles shop while on tour with Enable Travel. The shop sold handmade rugs, carpets, clothes, and more. Since the prices were a bit lot more reasonable than the jewelry, I did end up buying a small rug to hang on my bedroom wall. However, my favorite thing about the textiles shop was the fact that we actually got to see exactly how everything was made. We did a short tour before shopping inside the store and saw how the carpets are made. It’s such a time-consuming process and can take several months to create one rug. I had a newfound admiration for each and every piece of carpet inside the store after seeing all of the work that goes into making them.

Henna Tattoos
 .
Okay, it’s confession time… I have a slight obsession with tattoos. Before visiting India, I had 7 tattoos. After visiting India, I now have 8. Yepp, I got a tattoo in India… well, kind of. I actually got a henna tattoo in Jaipur and then got it permanently tattooed on once I was back home.
 .
On my last day in Jaipur, while rolling to the Jantar Mantar Observatory, which I’ll talk about next, I saw a woman doing henna tattoos on the sidewalk. I immediately went over to her and told her that I wanted an elephant henna tattoo on my right hand. Within five minutes, she freehanded a really cool elephant henna design on my hand and within another ten minutes, I knew that I wanted to get it permanently tattooed on me as soon as I returned home. Talk about the ultimate souvenir, right?! Check it out –

The Jantar Mantar Observatory
 .
Now that I was all tatted up, we went to the Jantar Mantar Observatory. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has 19 astronomical instruments and was completed in 1734. It was remarkable to see how intelligent they were back then with zero technology. I can’t imagine what the process of making these instruments was like, but it was so awesome to see them still properly working today.

The 19 different instruments can measure time, predict eclipses, and even track the location of stars as Earth moves around the sun. As if all of that wasn’t impressive enough, Jantar Mantar is also home to the largest stone sundial in the world. As a math geek, this probably topped my personal list of places to visit in Jaipur in 2 days.

Where to Stay in Jaipur: Fairmont Jaipur

 .
If I went back to Jaipur and could only repeat one thing from this entire visit, I would choose to stay at the Fairmont Jaipur again. This was hands-down the best place that I have ever stayed in my entire life. I’m not even exaggerating at all. From the moment that we arrived, we were treated like royalty by the staff and my accessible room was truly fit for a king.

The Fairmont Jaipur has 245 rooms and suites that are elegantly designed with traditional Rajasthani décor. I stayed in a wheelchair accessible room with a king bed and a roll-away bed. The room was extremely spacious and a hoyer lift/hoist could roll under the bed. The bed was a bit high though, so if you can transfer yourself, this could be an issue.

While the room was great, the accessible bathroom was the real star of the show. It was HUGE and had a roll-in shower with a handheld sprayer and there were grab bars around the toilet. There were also two sinks for even more convenience.

Aside from the spectacular room, the breakfast buffet was one of the best I’ve ever had. There were donuts, pastries, eggs, more traditional Indian foods, and literally dozens of other options as well. No matter what type of breakfast you prefer, they’re sure to have it.

Lastly, the Fairmont Jaipur has several on-site restaurants to suit any palette and at night, you can find entertainment in the hotel lobby. We were able to watch two ladies dancing to Bollywood music, which was excellent, and there was also a palm reader in the lobby. Just be sure to tip them for their service. Fairmont Jaipur turned me into a raving fan of Fairmont properties and I really wish that I could go back to Jaipur right now just to stay here.

Jaipur was the last stop on my tour of India’s Golden Triangle and I only had a couple days to see it, but I’m already dreaming of my return to the Pink City. Whether you’re getting henna tattoos (and then permanent tattoos), admiring palaces, or staying in luxurious accessible hotels that make you want to move in, Jaipur is sure to capture you like it did me.

    Cory Lee,

This Indian town of Jaipur is a jewel of many artifacts. It is interesting to find that the locals are the most friendly people you can meet.
