A Wheelchair Accessible Travel Guide to Switzerland

As a wheelchair user and frequent traveler, I’ve explored some remarkable places throughout Europe in my lifetime. I have gone hot air ballooning over Catalonia, rolled through ancient ruins in Italy with an all-terrain wheelchair, and hiked on accessible trails in Estonia to name a few of my most memorable moments. Despite all my incredible experiences in Europe though, I was in awe of Switzerland’s accessibility during my recent trip with the accessible tour company Claire & George. After eight days in Switzerland with them, I fully believe that it might be the most wheelchair accessible destination in Europe for a variety of reasons.

When I travel, it can sometimes be a bit of a debacle since I use a heavy motorized wheelchair to get around. Frequently, I encounter inaccessible transportation, hotels, or attractions, but Switzerland was honestly the easiest and smoothest trip I’ve had in years. Not only is accessibility top-of-mind from a structural standpoint in Switzerland, but the people are friendly and constantly went out of their way to ensure I was enjoying everything. It was a special trip and one that I’ll never forget.

In this article, I’ve rounded up the best wheelchair-friendly experiences to consider when visiting Switzerland, from accessible restaurants to top hotel options for disabled travelers. By the time you finish reading, I’m sure that you’ll be ready to book your own trip to the accessible gem of Europe!
