Book Guaranteed Accessible Hotel Rooms with Wheel the World

As a wheelchair user and frequent traveler, I have booked hundreds, maybe thousands, of hotel stays throughout my life. With each hotel stay, I have relied on information on the hotel’s website and calling them to verify accessibility. If I had to guess, I’d say that approximately 50% of the rooms that I’ve ever booked were as accessible as I needed. It has been a constant battle for me to find an adequate room when traveling and it’s been even more challenging to get information about the accessibility of each hotel room. But all of that is changing thanks to a company known as Wheel the World

For years, I have relied on Wheel the World for planning accessible trips. I’ve traveled to Chile and Barcelona with them already and am collaborating with them for the Curb Free Group Trips later this year in Greece and Mexico. Wheel the World was founded by a wheelchair user, Alvaro Silberstein, so they are passionate about making travel more inclusive and they have the firsthand knowledge to create change. They are now using their passion to make truly accessible hotel rooms easier to find, which is amazing!

Recently, I was planning a trip to Atlanta and wanted to find an accessible hotel that could meet my needs, so I decided to search Wheel the World’s website to see what hotels were listed. After typing in my destination of choice, I immediately saw several hotel options around Atlanta, but I was really intrigued with The Westin Buckhead Atlanta. Wheel the World’s site showcased three room categories for this hotel and each of the three included multiple, terrific photos. It was so helpful to see actual photos of the room’s shower, toilet and grab bars, sink, bed, and doorways. I wasn’t just going to have to take someone’s word at the front desk of what was included… I could actually see it!

I was also excited to see all the features of each room listed, including the exact height of the beds and toilets, width of the doorways, and the dimensions of space beside the bed, among other features. This is truly a dream come true as I have always had to call the hotel directly and ask a ton of questions about what was included in the room, all of which was answered on Wheel the World’s website! And the fact that there were so many great photos really eased my mind and I felt that I could finally book a room with confidence that would meet my needs.

Just some of the information that Wheel the World includes

After selecting the executive king accessible suite with a bed the height that I needed, a roll-in shower with no barrier, and a handheld shower sprayer, I was set for my trip to Atlanta. I will have to admit that this is the first trip that I have ever been on, that I did not call the hotel in advance. I placed all my trust and faith in Wheel the World to have done the homework for me to make sure that my needs in this hotel stay were met. Their website states that their team visits each hotel room to make an accessibility report and that they map every detail by taking measurements and photos to record and show the accessibility of the places that they offer. It also states that accessibility is guaranteed at no extra cost, and that you stay in the accessible room that you request or your money back! How cool is that?!

As we drove to Atlanta, I thought to myself that it sounded too good to be true. A hotel room that would be perfect for my needs and I didn’t even have to request pictures of it or talk with anyone over the phone? But as I pulled into The Westin Buckhead Atlanta, the hotel was in a great location. The valet service stated that wheelchair accessible valet parking was a free service, so my stay was already starting off great! Rolling to the lobby, I was still a little apprehensive of what the room would be like even though I had seen about 10 actual photos of it on Wheel the World’s website

The living area in my room

After checking in with a friendly staff member, he handed me the keys to the king accessible suite and up the elevator I went. Opening the door, I was blown away with the size of my room. It looked exactly as it did in the photos, but live and in person was even better. I brought my measuring tape just to check the dimensions that were on the website, and sure enough, everything was exact! The bed was perfect! The roll-in shower was perfect! And I couldn’t have been more pleased with this room.

Wheel the World has honestly changed the game when it comes to booking an accessible hotel. I will continue to book with them when hotels are available on their website and will put my trust in them to ensure that I will have the relaxing stay that I desire. It is so relieving to know that if I do have an issue at check-in or during my stay, I can contact Wheel the World and they will solve it as quickly as possible.
